New York Yankees Series Review: Washington Nationals
The Yanks and the Nats split a two game series in the Bronx Monday and Tuesday, but besides the loss, the Yankees might have bigger problems on their hands.
Game one showed promise from a guy who has been quite irrelevant since April. Didi Gregorious left the yard twice, both solo shots, to help power the Yankees past the Nats 3-0. Bryce Harper was plunked twice, and took himself out in the eighth inning. C.C. Sabathia would last 5 2/3, walking and striking out 3 while not giving up a run. No surprise, the Yankees bullpen would finish the game with Green, Betances, and Chapman while only giving up one hit. Tanner Roark was pegged with the loss after finishing his night with 6 innings, 3 ER, and 5 K’s. The problem for the Yankees was their bats, or lack thereof. The Yanks 1-5 in the order went 2-15 (.133). Gary Sanchez didn’t start, because he is batting .190 on the year. While he still has 12 HR’s and 35 RBI’s, that seems to be the Yankees plague. If they’re not hitting home runs, they’re not scoring many runs.
The second game brought the youthfulness to light in the league. The Nationals 19 year old star Juan Soto was responsible for the win. Soto hit a 3 run Bomb, and the go-ahead solo shot in the 7th. Nats starter Erick Fedde would get the boot after 5, giving up 4, with just 2 strikeouts. Sonny Gray countered with more of the same stat line, 5 innings, 4 earned, just 1 strikeout. Greg bird left the yard, Stanton went 3-4, and Yankees youngster Gleyber Torres also went deep for his 12th on the year. Gary Sanchez sat this game out as well.
Yankees fan Twitter has been going bonkers over some roster moves lately, and rightfully so. Some want Sanchez’s head on a platter, some want Bird gone, some don’t believe Hicks should start for us (me). I still think Gary Sanchez is the best offensive catcher in the game, but wouldn’t be opposed to maybe trying some options at first. Drury has experience there. Who knows, and honestly, who cares, they’re winning, with tune of 43-20 so I’m happy. Yankees will play host to the Rays in a four game series starting tonight.
