NCAA Baseball Tournament Preview
Omaha is almost upon us. It’s the best time of the NCAA baseball season as we are seeing regionals start today and then super regionals. Florida is the overall #1 seed and the heavy favorite to repeat. My pick to win it all is Ole Miss but today we are going to look at some under the radar teams who can do some damage. After all, we all want to see the underdogs win right?
Coastal Carolina (42-17)
The Chanticleers are hosting the Conway regional but have been under the radar all year. They did just recently win the CWS and are looking to head back to Omaha. They are lead by their shortstop Seth Lancaster, who may be one of if not the hottest hitter in the NCAA right now. He was a first team all Sun-Belt pick this season. Since they get to host, I’m expecting them to win their region. It includes UCONN, Washington, and LIU-Brooklyn, whom the Chanticleers play first.
The Tigers are the two seed in the Raleigh regional and really made a strong push in the SEC tournament. Beating Kentucky in the first game via walk-off, and then they took down Ole Miss in the second game with some late game heroics. Lead by potential #1 draft pick Casey Mize, the Tigers are looking to shake things up on NC State’s home field. Talented freshman, and frenchman Edouard Julian made his presence felt in a big way during the SEC tournament by hitting a grand slam against Ole Miss. He was basically a threat to hit a bomb every time he came up to the plate. Miss is a winner and I’m 100% sure this will be his last few weeks as an Auburn Tiger and he will not go down without a fight.
Although you may have never heard of the Stetson Hatters out of Deland, FL, they are one of the best teams in the country and are going to put on a great display of baseball for the country to see. The Hatters have some of the best pitching in the country, lead buy ace Logan Gilbert who has a 10-1 record with a 2.52 ERA. Gilbert is a potential top 10 pick in this years draft. THEN, he hands the ball off to the #2 man in Joey Gonzalez. Gonzalez boasts an 8-3 record with a 1.77 ERA. according to their website, the hatters are giving up 2.6 runs per game. That is absurd. If you want to see some good pitching, I’d suggest watching the Stetson Hatters.
Cal State Fullerton (32-23)
Making their 27th consecutive NCAA regional, you can never count these guys out. Former third baseman Tony Martinez said, ” we don’t expect to win a regional or to win the Big West, we expect to go to Omaha.” The Titans find themselves in one of the toughest regionals. It includes Stanford, the Titans, Baylor, and Wright State. The reason it is tough is because of host team Stanford who are one of the best teams in the country. The reason I think Fullerton will give Stanford trouble is because they play great small-ball. As baseball fans know, all it takes is one mistake to be made on a bunt and then all hell could break loose. For some good baseball, tune into the Stanford regional.
These are just a few teams who I think could do some damage. When it’s time for Omaha, we will see if any of these teams can prevail to make it to TD Ameritrade Field. Time to sit back, relax, and watch a full slate of College Baseball all day.
